what cars are good on gas?.......

Published Apr. 9, 2008

I'm talking 30 mpg or better? Anyone on here have cars that get that many miles per gallon. If so do you recommend it? I'm so sick and tired of paying high prices plus the fact it's killing my wallet. I'm thinking very seriously of trying to find a good used car just to drive back and forth to work. It's been so long since I've bought a car I don't know what's out there. If I could get by on 50 bucks a week in gas I'd be a happy camper!

I have a Jeep Patriot and I have been getting between 30-36 depending on how often I am on the interstate. Also, I use cruise control very often. :)

I have had a 1999 Nissan Altima that got 32 hwy and no problems after 117,000 miles. Sold it to a man who wanted it for his wife and bought a new 2008 Altima and it gets 32 hwy. Both had the 4 cyl engines, the 2008 had plenty of power with the CVT transmission. Highly recomend it.

Keeping one's oil fresh and changed often will boost your gas mileage a noticable amount.

Just traded my Jeep Cherokee that got 15-17 mpg for a Honda Civic that is will get about 35 on the highway, and 30ish in town. Though I do have a few friends who say that they can get up over 40mpg straight highway, at cruising speed, of course.

I also have 2 friends who've got the Honda Fit. One of them has the base model (it gets better mileage than the sport version) and he got 46mpg on a recent trip from Ohio to Florida (mostly highway, they took the kids to Disney).

A lot of the mpg for these lighter cars depends on the driver and where they drive.

I just couldn't take the higher car payment plus higher gas prices... when the Jeep hit the 2008 worst cars for the environment list, I really knew I couldn't keep it.. that was sorta the icing on the proverbial cake.

Btw, I used to drive a diesel Rabbit in the late 80s that got about 55mpg.

Same for the old Civic hatchback we had that was unleaded.

"I drive a MAzda 3 and i get about 36 hwy miles per gallon! If i dont drive a whole lot extra during the week (just work & home) then i only have to fill up about every 2 weeks. right now with gas at 3.25 it takes abotu $40 to fill my car up. BUT its the best running car! i love mazdas they will last forever!!"

I have to disagree, never buy a mazda, the guy at AAMACO transmissions says he does 1 honda to 10 mazdas. Mazdas have really bad transmissions!!

Nissan Frontier gets about 19 - 26 mpg. Seems it's thristy all the time.

i have a toyota yaris...supposedly the best non-hybrid for gas mileage, advertised at 39 mpg highway. we in reality get more like 35. 10 gallon tank and we usually get 350-360 mi out of it. and $30 fill ups are nice!

beats the heck out of my 22 mpg chrysler which i paid $55 to fill up yesterday!

"An older Honda Civic hatchback use to easily get 40+ on the highway. Now the uber-economical car can't even break 35?"

The Civic used a much different type of engine, had less power, and was also a much lighter car. I've owned a 1986 Civic Sedan and a 1990 Civic Hatchback... both got around 45mpg.

2006 Toyota Corolla - 42 combined mpg

1992 Toyota Paseo 1500cc; CAI - 4 to 1 long tube headers, 50mpg

1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R; JDM lowport... 20gpm *LoL!*

My Camry gets awesome mileage - I calculated it on a road trip and it was 40.5 mph. Love it! :)
