going once, going twice, going green!

Published Apr. 18, 2008

Protecting the environment, or "going green" is a topic that's gaining popularity and definitely on the minds of many.

From long-time environmentalists to the newly-conscious consumer, more and more people are looking for ways to "do their part."

So, tell us:

  • What's the biggest lifestyle change you've made to help the environment?
  • What stores do you think are the most "green friendly"?
  • Would you ever be willing to ride the bus instead of driving to work if there were more convenient bus routes?
  • Maybe you’d like to get involved, but don’t know where to start. If so, what are your questions?

Let's start a dialogue.

I just want to know if anyone knows anything about "water 4 gas". I heard about it on a news bite on the web. I when to "water 4 gas" but not sure if this is for real. Please help! I would love to save on my gas bill like everyone and help others save by passing this information to all. I recycle all my papers, cans, plastic and glass.

The largest impact we can have is in the biggest investment we make.... It's our home! All day long while we are at work or running errands, our homes are still burning energy! GET A HOME ENERGY AUDIT! Everyone is worried about their MPG's, but they don't think about the easiest and CHEAPEST options in their homes. www.Eco-Anthracite.com

There's a few ways to "go green". The Gen X vs Y bit earlier today had me thinking up parts to add in. It can be as simple as if you are remodeling your home to install good window units to save heating/cooling costs. In other climates insulate more then the recommended as well. If you garden, compost your fruit/vegetable excess.

I agree Admiral. Disposal of mercury content there is often a charge for CFL's and long tubes. I found using natural light during the day, and blinds to block out the excess heat gain helps me avoid using the AC, even with a good amount of southern exposure.

More and more of the municipalities are gaining ridership due to the fuel costs. It's getting too expensive for people to drive. Diesel is at over 4.25 right now. Even if you can get 45mpg it has been climbing with no drop in sight. People are going to have to go away from the one person per car routine. If you live and work within routes, a monthly bus card is a tank of gas for a car.

Here's a great new site for all ages who are interested in saving our planet! www.itstheplanetdidiot.com

Unfortunately the bulb used as the picture in this blog post is not environmentally or human friendly.

People don't think about one bulb with mercury in it. Just like those who did not think about the medical equipment that had a trace amount of mercury in it until many of the dumps became EPA supersites.

They also don't consider that some epileptic seizures are triggered by these likes blinking at 60 hz.

And the ballasts emit X-Ray Radiation, causing some issues.

I have a problem with all the excess packaging involved with products. You buy something from walmart, it takes a surgeon to open it, and a dumpster to get rid of the debris. Until recently, I lived with my 86 yo mom, and she could not open stuff she bought. All that plastic packaging involves petroleum products, duh?

I absolutely refuse to have styrofoam in my home. I think that is important. I don't pump gas in the evenings when it is extremely hot, recycle aluminum cans & get the newspaper on-line instead of delivery. I would certainly use public transportation if it were available. Would love to recycle more...Maybe I need to work on that.

Yes, I would ride a bus, ride a train, or any other form of public transportation that is convenient and cheap enough. I was stationed in the St Louis area and used all of those modes of transportation while I lived there. It was safe, dependable, convenient and easy to use. That's the only way you can get people to use public transportation. A lot of the businesses and the federal government in that area paid for monthly passes on the local public transportation system if their employees agreed to ride it to work. A system needs support from everyone, the riders as well as the employers. We had park and ride lots for people who had to drive part of the way to catch public transportation. A light rail system with intersecting bus routes would be perfectly suited for the Triangle. Everyone would benefit.
