suggestions anyone?

Published Apr. 30, 2008

the way all the prices for everything continue to go up (i.e. groceries, gas, etc.) I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for helping the recession we are in currently (or the one we getting ready to enter depending on how you choose to look at it.) any suggestions on cutting costs on certain things, or something like that? Not only to benefit myself, but anyone else who needs help with this. it's scary to think about, but this is only going to get worse before it gets better, so any help/suggestions that anyone has are much appreciated. Thanks, can't wait to see them! have a good day everyone!

check out sundaysaver.com for the weekly sales by store

I just came across this article. It talks about ways to save and has links to other online sites as well.

http://www.kare11.com/news/ts_article.aspx?storyid=508795

Tidbit- And I find the time it takes me to cut, file and use the coupons is not worth the amount of the savings.....I use generics for almost everything. I also have a menu, use a grocery list, etc. I think that saves me just as much as if I used coupons.

The thing about coupons... if you don't get them online for free - you hav to BUY a newspaper to get them. I find that the News & Disturber is not worth the paper it is printed on and was one of the first expenditures to go for me. LOL even when they offer free papers at the grocery store - the only thing I keep it for is to help start fires in the fireplace in the winter.

But the cost of buying a Sunday paper - to me is not worth the savings of the coupons to get it. Especially when generally, the store brand is cheaper anyway

First of all, we're not in a recession and we're not close to one, since we haven't even had one quarter of a negative GDP.......BUT....

We cut down our cable to basic......If it will work with your school, work or kids' school schedules, try to carpool, even 2 days a week....Adjust your AC thermostat....Get a programmable thermostat.....generic brands, sales, coupons, less eating out, etc, etc....

Figure out how much you spend on one lunch or dinner out and you will be amazed at how much you will save by cutting one or two a month out.....

I agree with Slayer, one hting you absolutely can't cut back on is quality TP. Good TP is worth it!

Food: Coupons, generics, bulk buying, and Don't eat out. Food you prepare at home is healthier and a whole lot cheaper. Just invest in some storage bowls to take stuff to work, or divide up for meals later and freeze. Buy things when they are on sale. Coupons help, too. Go to Walgreen's on Monday and they sell the Sunday paper (that's where you find coupons)for $1. Most grocery stores have their sales posted on their web sites, so you don't need to buy a newspaper for that. I do a fair amount of shopping on line, and never buy without finding coupon codes for a % off, or free shipping - just go to google and type in the company you are buying from, and "coupon code" It has never failed me. A friend who is having some work done on her house has saved 10% on everything she has needed at Lowe's (over 2 grand, so far) by finding coupons on line, or on ebay- spending a dollar for a 10% off coupon -- you do the math. Car Pool, but don't skimp on car maintenance.

We've started buying a lot of store brand items.

Food: you can go through store flyers online to see what sale items are available. some stores start sales each Sunday; others start sales on wednesdays. Stay away from prepared foods they are more costly. Combine trips if you can; example, on Sunday I make a post office run and then go to the store across the street for my food run. Also; if you buy soda or snacks; don't. Then look at potential extras; phone, cable, and so on. Only buy new clothes to replace worn out clothes. Try shopping online, lots of times places like JC Penny will offer free shipping; so you can order it and have it delivered to your home and that keeps you off the road and out of the malls. If you buy lunch at work; start taking your lunch. Dinner leftovers almost equal a free lunch.

We have a freezer and always wait for sales on chicken, hamburger, fish, etc; I don't think we have paid full price for meat in years. Making a weekly menu is vital since everything is frozen and something must be taken out the night before. Plan meals around veggies on sale. We buy asparagus and green beans, blanch them in boiling water, freeze them on cookie sheets and store in zip-locs in the freezer. I buy a 2 liter soda and fill small bottles to take to work, saves $.65 a day, and I buy nabs at the grocery store. I just wish they'd put beer on sale!
