democrats and "civil rights"

Published Jul. 5, 2008

Here's a footnote to st8kdrivrs blog.

Found this letter while cleaning out a relatives attic years ago.  For those who don't want to believe Civil Rights never would have passed without Republicans, you are ignoring history.

(Oh, and I redacted the name to protect the innocent.)

Here's a translation for those who can't read it:

"I have your letter and throughly enjoyed seeing you on your recent trip to Washingston.

I appreciate your commendation of the fight of the Southern Senators have been waging in the debate opposing the Civil Rights legislation.

I hope to see you some time this fall while I am in North Carolina.

With all kind wishes, I am,

Sincerely yours,

Sam J. Ervin, Jr."

tawney - you are ignorant of history

Totals are in "Yea-Nay" format: Votes on 1964 Civil Rights Act - The original House version: 290-130 (69%-31%) The Senate version: 73-27 (73%-27%) The Senate version, as voted on by the House: 289-126 (70%-30%) - By party The original House version: - Democratic Party: 152-96 (61%-39%) Republican Party: 138-34 (80%-20%) The Senate version:[7] - Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%-31%) Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%) The Senate version, voted on by the House: - Democratic Party: 153-91 (63%-37%) Republican Party: 136-35 (80%-20%) - - You should note that the democrats were in the majority and that the 64 Civil Rights Act would NEVER have been made law without the input of the REPUBLICAN party. Period.

Robert Byrd, former klan Grand Klegel and present day darling of the democrats, filbustered for 72 hours.

Democrats have much to be ashamed of when it comes to race issues.

The Civil rights movement produced the so called "Dixiecrats" which included Sam Erwin. Started by Strom Thurmond and culminating in George Wallace's presidential campaign. Yes, bi-partisan support in other parts of the US passed civil rights legislation. Lincoln had a complex attitude toward slavery prior to the start of the Civil War. He opposed slavery but supported the constitution and was not a radical abolitionist. Abolitionists were scattered through all the parties including the Whigs, but were perhaps loudest at the time in the Republican party. More a function of regionalism than party platform. Lincoln embraced the abolition of slavery because he needed every person he could possibly get in his corner for the war. There is an excellent article about Lincoln and slavery here: http://www.historynow.org/12_2005/historian3.html However, The Reconstruction, the election of R Hayes, The Gilded Age, and WWI make the old parties difficult to compare to the modern ones.

Civil rights laws passed in the 60's because Democrats and Republicans worked together.

As a sidebar.....Abraham Lincoln, after all, was a Republican.

OS where are the comments???. LOL If we knew all the reasons behind our leaders actions, we would probably turn over in our graves and we aren't even dead yet...........Good fact you have there sir and I'd say it looks authentics
