are there any deaf people on here?

Published Jul. 24, 2008

Today at work we had one of our regularly scheduled safety meetings where we have to sit and watch boring 'safety at work' videos that we have watched again and again. As I began to space out like usual (as was most everyone else) I began to pay attention to the sign language person that helps a deaf lady at my work. Now, I know there are many reasonsto be thankful for not being deaf, but at this moment I felt really bad for the woman. No matter how much she might not want to, she has to pay full attention to every single word that is said so she is not disrepectful to her helper. I don't personally know any deaf people (we have a big office and  don't know this lady), so I figured I'd post this on here. How bad do meetings like this suck for you?

I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE A CLASS ON SIGN LANGUAGE. i knowof a child that is deaf.He has been corrected for things s many times that he did not understand untill parents found out he could not hear.

I may be the only one to respond to your question. I also work in a place where one of the employees is deaf and has the same deal to have to actually always pay attention. Before I changed jobs I used to have to take an electrical safety course every year, and get a certification proving I had passed it. This was a result of a very experienced person electrocuting themselves. It was the typical mistake of allowing your caution to drift, when you have worked for a long time around high voltage/high amperage equipment. It was not that the person did not know what he was doing, he simply made a stupid and unfortunately a fatal error. So each and every year those of us that worked on this kind of equipment had to take the exact same safety course. It drove us all nuts.

To clarify, I consider any language to be "foreign" unless I speak or use it in my home on a regular basis.

Of course I might be deaf...at least my wife says I am. I think its just "selective" hearing. :)

Would you consider sign language to be an acceptable alternative to learning a foreign language? At NCSU I can take Arabic, Farsi, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, Italian, Portuguese, or Russian but ASL (American Sign Language) wouldn't count as fulfilling the foreign language requirement for a four year degree.

strollin, I thought you hated kids.

jeez my spelling is bad.

I know what you mean Mom. My loss is in the high frequency zone. Especialy with women, I hear when you speak, but my brain inturpets different. And for that, I give off the wall answers sometimes if I not heard correctly. Sometimes I like the expression on ones face when I do that. I do, however, ask for a repeat a lot. It is annoying to me to have to ask again. Maybe one day I'll break down and get more help. Just glad Blah puts up with me.

my hubby has a slight hearing loss,,it's not bad but it is there. He worked around loud equipment for years. I have to make sure that I have his attention when I'm talking so that he can pay close attention. Even then he has to ask me to repeat myself sometimes. There are a number of people that I know with partial hearing loss. I hope when I talk to them I don't make them feel uncomfortable or embarrassed when they have to ask me to repeat something. I try not to because all of us have something that we struggle with. Some issues are just more noticeable than others

My advice to those that actually care to help: If you notice that someone frequently does not respond when you talk, or answers completely different from what you have asked, then be aware that this person may have a dxd or undiagnosed hearing impairment. Be sure to talk slowly so that lips may be read, and speak up in a louder volume if they have partial hearing. My condition is called otosclerosis and I had an implant, but it malfunctioned and came through my eardrum. I just had surgery 3 weeks ago and still have no hearing in that ear. This makes it very difficult to hear anything in the ear with better hearing, especially when the sound is coming from behind or on the side of the ear affected. I will be having to get back into the workforce soon, and I am very concerned that I will not be able to do the types of jobs I so loved in the past because of it. I can only imagine what it must be like for someone that is completely deaf. :)

NM, it's a shame that things that would help are so expensive
