sampson county woman mistakenly jailed
Published Aug. 21, 2008Janice Williams, 57, of Salemburg, was pulled over in Clinton for not wearing a seat belt. A driver’s license check mistakenly identified Williams as a woman in California wanted for a parole violation. Unfortunate as this may have been for Ms. Janice, it is a reality of today's society. Everytime Law Enforcement stops a car there is a risk of running up on someone that is a wanted fugitive. When an opportunity exists that the person you are standing in front of is a fugitive, then you take all the necessary steps to verify their identity.Unfortunately other states are not very forth coming with information to prove a persons identity one way or the other. I have had problems getting Texas to send me a picture on a man I held for several hours on a furgitive warrant. All the west coast statesare quick to enter persons into NCIC as wanted, BUT extremely uncooperative when it comes to identifying these persons. It seems that the local POlice did what they could to id Ms. Janice, but again the California fell short on their part.
