some observations

Published Aug. 28, 2008

Here are some observations about Barack Obama:

  1. He is wealthy.
  2. He was a lecturer at the University of Chicago law school.
  3. Predicate to his academic post, he is very well educated.
  4. He is well spoken in that he uses standard English and not street language and inflections or Ebonics.
  5. He attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School, not traditionally black insititutions like Howard University or NCCU law.
  6. He has worked at some of the most influential law firms in the country, firms which are overwhelming white.
  7. He apparently broke ties with his former minister, an afro-centrist, racist freak.
  8. His mother is white.
  9. He has a rather light skin tone for a black man.

Why aren't blacks all over the country calling him an Uncle Tom and a sellout for "acting white?"  I mean, that's what happened to Clarance Thomas, Bill Cosby, Shelby Steele, Walter Williams, Juan Williams, Thomas Sowell, and hundreds of other blacks who "got it" when it came to personal responsibility.

It's also what happens to all too many black children in school every day from their thug peers.

"The American part has not been determined yet."

Yea, actually, it has. It was never an issue in the first place.

Texasbaby, ROFLO! I must agree. Especially when he and Michelle feel we need to roll out the red carpet at our borders

Atozna: Not sure where you are from, but that has not been my experience, ...as a biracial person with biracial children, and grandchildren.

Cone's theory is based upon black pride,Harrison. He's saying that, (to use this as an example), why should white people be in awe of a black person being admitted to an Ivy League institution and graduating with honors, and then on the flip side, think it's the norm for white people.

When a white person thinks that this is such a phenomenal feat for a black person (to be admitted and graduate from an Ivy League school under their own merits), then the white person is contributing to the ideology of viewing that black person as a victim. (less than equal). That's why Cone says that the "thrust" of BLT is to be free of white oppression because white people view black people as victims.*

(The above statements are not consistent with my personal viewpoints, but I am familiar with the works of Dr. James Hal Cone of Union Theological Seminary in N.Y.)

"He is an American who is biracial regardless of where his parents are citizens."

The American part has not been determined yet.

Steve, I know exactly what you are asking about acting white. I don't know why everyone is dancing around your question or pointing out that other races do it to! LOL

I have biracial friends and the teenagers are constantly being told by their black peers that they need to decide if they are going to be black or white. They find that they are more accepted by other races and refuse to be just black or white.

He is an American who is biracial regardless of where his parents are citizens.

I personally want an American for president, not someone who feels the need to further define their roots. Regardless of race, we are all AMERICANS. I am not a Hispanic-American, Asian-American, or European-American. I am an American. As long as we feel the need to further define ourselves, we will not be a united country.

"Again, you miss the point! Black theology and the black experience are the foundations for Black Liberation Theoology!" -Tawny

I have not argued the point that you insist on making. Yes, the "black experience" is the foundation for BLT.

Are you arguing against my point that Cone's views are little more than Marxist victimology?

Are you calling Cone's views a valid representation of the "black experience"?
