Outhouses - the disappearing landmarks of rural America. Have you ever owned or used an outhouse? Maybe when you were a kid, you walked your little brother or sister to the outside in the middle of the night with a dim flashlight. Perhaps you grew up beside neighbors who had an outhouse, or maybe your grandparents told stories of trips to the outhouse when they were kids. Or maybe you are an outhouse expert or collector.  Share your outhouse stories on today's blog!

Texas steakhouse in Garner use to have all these pictures of outhouses in their bathrooms. I use to like looking at them while waiting for a slow person to hurry up. Some of them were very creative.

My greatgrandmother had an out house. I used a bush. Did not like the dark hole that might just have had a spider to bite my boootocks.

tarheelblue919,

I'm in my 20's and remember visitng my grandmother (mother's mom) and she had and outhouse. She had no indoor plumbing, yes I remmeber the metal tub as well, an outhouse, and a pump. In regards to the pump, man it was the best water you could ever taste. I dreaded using thatouthouse because if you had to do anything other than pee-pee you always had to go to the outhouse and it was way back in the woods, dark, smelly and you always saw a granddaddy long legs.

...Patty, I know what you mean. In the hot days of summer, I would rather go out in the woods and "bend a green sapling"...

...that one looks like a "reading room"...

I can remember when I was a little girl (I was about 4 or 5) and we used to visit my grand-mother. She lived with one of my uncles (my dad's brother) and they had a out-house. I remember telling my mom I had to use the potty and she took me outdoors to use this outhouse. I was petrified. I cryed because I was scared I was going to fall in. I would not use it. I went behind it and squated down to pee=pee. We went back to visit a few times (not much, since my dad's family wasn't close) but I would never use the outhouse. We would always stop at a service station before we got there, so we could all use the bathroom. LOL

am i the only young person who had an outhouse as a kid?? lol is there anyone else out there in their 20's that lived with no hot water, and an outhouse and a metal bath tub that hung on the back porch??LOL

My grandparents had an outhouse way back when I was a kid. I can barely remember what it looked like, but I can easily remember what it smelled like. In today's world though, outhouses are still around in more places than you might think. Practically every new construction site will have a port-a-john. These figerglass units are the new and modern version of the old wooden ones that- in those days - was a luxury.

Heck yeah, my grandma and grandad were farmers and had an outhouse until I was about 13 (I'm 42, so that ain't long ago). They always had a JCPenney or Sears catalog (without the color glossy pages-they were like newspaper) and a bucket of shucked corn cobs that you could smooth out and screw onto a dowel with a screw on the end of it. I always preferred the catalog, but my grandad swore the cob "cleaned" better. LOL Those were the days....

My grandma had an outhouse when I was a kid.(40+ yrs. ago)We used the outhouse during the day and used a pee pot at night.I remember I went to the outhouse one time and there was a snake in there. It was the last time I went in there too.
