...was to attack Gov. Palin.
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," said Obama spox Bill Burton. "Gov. Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil, and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."
Republicans say it's noteworthy that, on the week commemorating the 88th anniversary of women getting the right to vote -- with McCain, making a groundbreaking VP pick -- the Obama campaign's first response was to attack, not congratulate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, or acknowledge the historic nature of her selection.
It was just yesterday that McCain ran a TV ad congratulating Obama on his historic achievement.
Upon further reflection, Sens. Obama and Biden issued a more carefully considered response:
“We send our congratulations to Gov. Sarah Palin and her family on her designation as the Republican nominee for vice president," said the Democratic ticket in a joint statement. "It is yet another encouraging sign that old barriers are falling in our politics. While we obviously have differences over how best to lead this country forward, Gov. Palin is an admirable person and will add a compelling new voice to this campaign."
The first response Republicans had to the Biden pick, of course, was to attack Obama with Biden's words. Then again, there's nothing particularly historic about picking a white male senator as your running mate.

lol...you forget that I am voting for McCain...my only concern about Palin is that I don't believe she is as much a social moderate as McCain is...I really will be watching the debates.

So how many presidential election cycles is that exactly? two? or do we count 2000 and make it three? (50% or 33% of the selected VP candidates in THIS century have been females then. Math is fun.). If you count each election cycle, that means we haven't had a female in seven cycles. How many cycles has it been since the DNC gave the nod to an African American for president? I wonder how that ratio plays out in the political field. I just tend to believe the gender bias is blown out of proportion. If the pool of candidates to choose from is predominantly male, why is it so shocking that the frequency of choosing females is less? Do you think we should always have a male and female ticket? Should it be every other cycle? I think McCain has made a political choice (not necessarily the best) in a political system...shocking.

There is a difference between "a big deal" and something "historic", I think if you spend a little time with a dictionary you'll see the point people are making about this not being "historic". They are correct, while this may be a big deal (subjective) this is in no way historic (objective).
That said, I think she will bring an interesting flavor to the McCain ticket and will appeal to some of the younger voters that McCain is having trouble reaching.

Twenty four hours ago, I thought McCain had this one in the bag. Now I think this decision makes the race a lot closer. In order to appease a group whose vote he almost certainly already had, McCain has blunted his own argument about Obama's relative inexperience, while simultaneously bringing to the forefront the concerns of many voters about his own age and health.
After the euphoria about the selection of an attractive new face wears out, serious doubts are likely to emerge about McCain's judgment. This decision may well bite him in the azz.
