commentary: is mccain out of his mind?

Published Aug. 29, 2008

(CNN) -- John McCain needs what Kinky Friedman calls "a checkup from the neck up."

In choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate, he is not thinking "outside the box," as some have said. More like out of his mind.

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment.

In choosing this featherweight, McCain passed over Tom Ridge, a decorated combat hero, a Cabinet secretary and the former two-term governor of the large, complex state of Pennsylvania. iReport.com: 'McCain pick might be a gimmick'

He passed over Mitt Romney, who ran a big state, Massachusetts; a big company, Bain Capital; and a big event, the Olympics.

He passed over Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas senator who is knowledgeable about the military, good on television and -- obviously -- a woman.

He passed over Joe Lieberman, his best friend in the Senate and fellow Iraq Kool-Aid drinker.

He passed over former congressman, trade negotiator and budget director Rob Portman.

And he also passed over Mike Huckabee, the governor of Arkansas.

For months, the McCainiacs have said they will run on his judgment and experience. In his first presidential decision, John McCain has shown that he is willing to endanger his country, potentially leaving it in the hands of someone who simply has no business being a heartbeat away from the most powerful, complicated, difficult job in human history.

Since most of you that are whiners and complainers and addressing the career of a women that you totally know NOTHING about let me enlighten you a little. I am an Alaskan native. Sara Palin was a brilliant choice for a number of reasons. (1) She is NOT a mommies girl who went to an ivy league college on mommy and daddies money. (2) She is not an "eliteist" Washatonian with a ba-zillion dollars tied up in shaky land deals and corporations (3) She will not take any amount of shizzle from as she put it - the good o'l boys in suits. (4) She rose from the ranks of a working mother and has now amassed to possibly the highest position in the nation - get over it, Barack Bin Laden just got sucker punched.

If he wanted a female VP candidate, my money would've been on Kay Bailey Hutchison. Although Palin is a clear nod to the ultra conservatives in the Repub corner.

McCains VP pick has equal or greater experience than the Dems pick for president. Obviously the liberals/democrats didn't think experience was needed or they would have never picked Obama in the first place.

SUSAN: This post was very well written! I didn't realize he passed up so many better choices. All this shows is that he choose her because of her genitalia.

If this were such a terrible choice, the libs wouldn't be poking their own eyes out over it! LOL - ya'll jumped the shark, by letting your party officials screw Hillary over. They knew about Edwards, he should have never been running; they knew about Obama's terrorist ties to Ayers and Dorhn, they knew about rev. WRight, and they conspired with their puppets, the mainstream media to cover it all up, because they thought the historic nature of a black candidate, would trump anything else! If you want to continue to support that organization, that's fine, but keep your crying towels handy, cause Nov. 4 is gonna be a tough night for ya.

If and when Palin becomes president, she will have been experienced as Vice President, at least.

Since the executive is an administrative position, I don't see where any of the four are experienced statesmen, administrators, or are real leaders.

Kennedy went from the Senate to President. There was probably another in the 20s or 30s. Governors galore have made the leap, and a president, and many VPs. This year, the voters have NO choice but to elect a Senator to President.

Administratively, Palin is more experienced than Obama. The Democrats can NOT use experience as a sword, but they can use her slightly more experience administratively as a shield to defend attacks on Obama's next to nothing administrative experience.

The Senate provides voting experience and knowledge, but there's a reason only a couple of Senators have gone directly into the presidency in the last hundred years, especially when almost all of them would loved to do so.

I've seen nothing said in this blog with any substance to discredit the choice of this lady. Foxes usually calls grapes sour when they can't reach them..........BTW i went to the websites for the complete constitution of the united states and she is qualified according to them. You may be referring to her experience but as a governor in office for two years and cleaned out the corruption in her own party is pretty impressive. Also to stand up to the big oil companies is pretty impressive. Also she has actually had more experience than Obama as dealing with issues of the whole state and not just his district. She's firm on her issues and doesn't back off. Maybe you should see her biography and then tell me what makes her less qualified as president than Obama, whom also has no foreign policy experience and little time in the political arena.

John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin? Can you say, "FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS"! Well, at least this time Dick Cheney is a lot prettier. Let's ALL TAKE A CHILL PILL AND CRY! We are truly in trouble.
