in texas school, teachers carry books and guns

Published Aug. 30, 2008

GOD BLESS TEXAS...

The school board in this impoverished rural hamlet in North Texas has drawn national attention with its decision to let some teachers carry concealed weapons, a track no other school in the country has followed. The idea is to ward off a massacre along the lines of what happened at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999.

“Our people just don’t want their children to be fish in a bowl,” said David Thweatt, the schools superintendent and driving force behind the policy. “Country people are take-care-of-yourself people. They are not under the illusion that the police are there to protect them.”

I lived in the Middle East for a while. I was armed with a concealed .45 ACP* all the time I was there.

I didn’t like it, or the general feeling of tension in the air. Also, I expect being armed made me go into some places that I otherwise would not have gone.

That being said, I never had a problem or felt like I ‘needed’ the gun. But with my mindset of that time – or now for that matter – I don’t think that I would have been used as a hostage.

Back to topic:

I think that we either TRUST our lawmen, teachers, pilots, or we don’t. There is no middle ground here. Yes, there will occasionally be problems and ‘events’.

I believe that, in the long run, the gun totters will do more good than harm ....

STS

* With a .45, no one is apt to make a foolish mistake and assume that it’s a small round that won’t do much damage. As we were told, there is no one on this entire planet that does not recognize a .45 or know exactly what it will do ....

It's sad it has to come to this but it's something to consider. The public schools are full of gang-bangers and convicts that don't care one bit about your children's well-being not to mention the trend of school shootings.

If you knew how many convicted felons were in the public schools you probably wouldn't keep your kids there. It's like sharks in the ocean, if you knew they were all around you then you would just go to a hotel pool. Realistically most teachers won't carry them anyway unless they feel they really need to so that may justify it a little more.

"See I just don't agree with this. What if the teacher snaps? What if the teacher starts shooting and hits my child in this situation? They need stun guns before they start allowing concealed weapons."

My son starts Kindergarten this year. I wish teachers WERE carrying conceled weapons at his school. I am not worried about my son being shot by a teacher with training in firearms. I am, however, concerned about the recent stories where young children have gotten ahold of AK-47's in the area...

“Country people are take-care-of-yourself people. They are not under the illusion that the police are there to protect them.”

Note taken--I've learned that. Sometimes they even think they are above the law...

hmm What if the teacher snaps and smashes a chair over little Drayquans head? What if he pulls out a 4 foot paddle with holes drilled in it and bends little Jose over in front of the class and delivers 3 very loud and sharp blows to his little smart-mouthed rear end? What if two teachers snap and begin to take turns in beating the living shiz out of little sally with cafeteria trays...My point is the gun is not going to make any difference....

Well maybe they need guns with sedatives? Like they do for animals.

See I just don't agree with this. What if the teacher snaps? What if the teacher starts shooting and hits my child in this situation? They need stun guns before they start allowing concealed weapons.

AnW - they did :-)

This is borderline insane. They need to go to the local police department and go through training before they are allowed to carry handguns in a school with children.

We were visiting friends and got a whirlwind tour.

My favorite place to visit in a new area is a hardware store. You get to see how the locals are dealing with local problems. The family I was visiting though I was nuts - wnating to browse the hardware store.
