On Dec. 9, 2001, Kathleen Peterson was found dead in a pool of blood at the bottom of a staircase in her home. Her husband, Durham novelist Michael Peterson, was charged with her death. Nearly two years later, a jury found Peterson guilty of first-degree murder. He is serving a life sentence at Nash Correctional Institution.
