Tara StanfordShades of Green
Tara Stanford explores what being “green” really means? How can I become greener? Do I have to trade my car to be green? Can I wear make-up and still be green? Is it easy to incorporate “greenness” into my daily life? What are the benefits of being green; is it really going to make a difference? Can I green-up my lifestyle and still take advantage of my own luxuries?

Shades of green: commuter vehicle?

One of the drawbacks of living in our area is the typical long commute to and from work.  Many people commute in excess of 20 miles to and from work.  My husband is one of the gang - he travels approximately 30 miles to and from our house to his work in RTP daily.  Luckily, most of this commute is highway driving.

But there is hope beyond the scope of alternative fuel vehicles.  Enter the smart car.  The smart is an incredibly small vehicle, measuring in at approximately eight and a half feet long and five feet wide; it is a vehicle designed to seat two with minimal storage.  But the smart gets around 40 miles per gallon and starts at a surprising $12,000 for the base model!

Check it out!  I hope we'll start to see more mini vehicles like the smart around the Triangle.  Can you see yourself driving one?

Majorme: Go to www.smartusa.com and check out the SmartTV link at the top of the page. Then click on "large man" and watch the video. You might also want to watch "roomy." I have ordered a SmartCar but, unfortunately there is about a year's wait, so I'm having to be patient driving my Scion Xa, which also gets great mileage.

At that mpg, you can get a larger Mini. Heck my Z4 gets over 30 mpg on the highway, 28 combined. Cute enough and would work in town, but if I had highway miles, no way.

AnimalLover- fair point. These cars are GREAT in city traffic on city streets, but I can see how some folks would be hesitant about taking them on the freeways. However, there are freeways in Europe, where this car has been common for several years, and I don't believe any reports have shown them less safe on them. (Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.)

Majorme - I don't know about 6'6, but I do know someone who's 6'3 and he had no problem fitting in one. If so, however, the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit both get just slightly less than the Smart, but with a tad more room. (Then of course, there are the hybrids.)

These cars are great and all but what about people like myself who are like 6'6" tall? I am a prety lean guy so weight has nothing to do with it but I can not fit well in any car that is very fuel efficient! As soon as there is a larger car that is fuel efficient....THEN I will be excited!

tstanford: I'm talking about GETTING RUN OVER by the behemoths on the road today. What about head-on collisions with one of these things? You're road kill in one of them.

Actually, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the smart fortwo a "good" rating in crash tests, which is the highest safety rating. You can find details of the crash test results here: http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsbyseries.aspx?id=632

I saw one of these yesterday & wondered what it was. OMG.

"...gets around 40 miles per gallon..." I wonder what the "around" means. If it really means 35, it's NOT worth driving this little bug, with NO protection from accidents & ALL the huge behemoths on the road today. It'd be like the wonderfully safe feeling bikers must have next to a 53 footer!!

If and when ALL vehicles become MUCH, MUCH smaller in size, then MAYBE I'd drive one. To glance at it, all I could think of was - YIKES - there's NO protection from anything else in them. You're like...on a bike....with a cover over & around you. That's it. They look like little bugs wheeling along. They're smaller than the original model beatle-VWs.

Yes! The smart center cary, located on Autopark Blvd. Here is their website: http://www.smartcentercary.com/

Do you know of any dealers locally who are planning to carry the Smart Car?
