UNC student reports strong-arm robbery

University police warned students to take extra safety precautions after a male student reported that he was robbed on the north campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill early Saturday.

The 23-year-old student walked back to campus from Franklin Street around 2 a.m., accompanied by two men he had met at a downtown restaurant, investigators said.

The victim said one of the men struck him from behind and knocked him to the ground outside Morehead Planetarium, in the 200 block of Franklin Street. The men continued to hit the victim before fleeing the on foot.

They stole the student's wallet and a small amount of cash, campus police said.

The victim suffered minor injuries. Investigators said no weapons were used in the robbery.

One robber was described as a black man in his early to mid 20s, standing 5 feet 8 inches, with a medium build. He wore khaki cargo pants, a white tank-top shirt and baseball cap.

A detailed description of the second robber was not available.

University police want anyone with information about the case to call the department at 919-962-8100 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7514. Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential, and callers never have to identify themselves or appear in court.
