Protesters demand higher bonds on criminal suspects

Convenience store clerk shot, killed

More than a dozen people protested outside the Vance County Sheriff's Office Thursday over bonds they view as too lenient.

The protest comes six days after a a convenience store clerk was killed by a Vance County man who was out on bond on weapons charges.

Demarius Antoine Benson, 19, of Eastway Drive, was arrested Sunday in the death of Sadeq Ali Mohommed Alashmali during a robbery last Friday of the Williamsboro Grocery on N.C. Highway 39 North.

One of the protest organizers said the group is concerned prosecutors and judges are cutting too many deals.

Vance County District Attorney Sam Currin said his office is doing the best job it can.

Another suspect in the convenience store shooting, Saadi T. Williams, 20, of Henderson, was arrested Tuesday.
