The Bats scratched out narrow leads over the Bulls twice Saturday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park only to see them disappear, but the third time was the charm as Louisville held off a would-be Durham rally to win 5-3.
Rob Mackowiak gave Louisville its first lead with a solo home run in the third inning, to which the Bulls responded with a Reid Brignac triple followed by a John Jaso double to even the score at one. Chris Dickerson homered in the sixth and Michael Griffin singled home Aaron Herr in the seventh to give the Bats a 3-1 lead. Justin Ruggiano doubled off the Blue Monster with two runners on in the bottom of the frame to even the score once again.
In the top of the ninth inning, Louisville rallied for two runs off Chris Mason (3-10, 6.39) with a Shaun Cumberland walk, a sacrifice bunt, a Paul Janish double and a single by Dickerson. The Bulls brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but they ultimately found themselves out of comebacks.
Daniel Ray Herrera (3-3, 2.25) got the win for Louisville in 1.1 innings of relief. Jeremy Cummings, in his final Bulls start before joining the United States Olympic Baseball Team, allowed five hits, three runs - two earned - and a walk with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
